Founded by Dr. Kevin Keane and now led by Drs. Ashley Taylor and Taryn Gassert, our practice combines decades of experience with state-of-the-art diagnostics and a team-based approach.
Our veterinarians are FEI-certified and actively involved in high-level equestrian sport—both in the field and in competition. We partner closely with riders and trainers to solve performance-limiting issues through thorough diagnostics, practical treatment plans, and advanced therapies, with a focus on soundness, injury management, and long-term athletic success.
Founder of Sports Medicine Associates and an internationally recognized sport horse veterinarian. Dr. Keane has served as a team vet at the Olympic Games and World Championships and is a co-author of Diagnosis and Management of Lameness in the Horse. He is FEI-certified, a lifelong rider, and remains active in the sport of eventing.
Co-owner of Sports Medicine Associates and an experienced competitor in eventing. Dr. Taylor specializes in imaging, biomechanics, and rehabilitation. She earned her DVM from Michigan State and completed an internship at New England Equine Medical and Surgical Center. She also operates Twin Ponds Farm, a private rehab and training facility.
Co-owner and sports medicine specialist with advanced training in lameness and imaging. Dr. Gassert is certified in equine acupuncture and is an FEI Treating Veterinarian. She holds degrees from the University of Delaware and the University of Pennsylvania and completed internships at Peterson & Smith and New Bolton Center.
Dr. Boss joined the practice in 2024 after completing her DVM at UC Davis and an internship at Mid-Atlantic Equine Medical Center. She is certified in veterinary acupuncture and has special interests in ophthalmology, diagnostic imaging, and laceration repair.
Dr. Keane is a 1979 graduate with honors of the University of Illinois School of Veterinary Medicine. In 1982 he joined the staff of the Delaware Equine Center where he practiced until opening his own practice, Sports Medicine Associates of Chester County, in August of 2005.
Dr. Keane’s interests include diagnosis and management of musculoskeletal injuries in race and sport horses. He has previously acted as a Team Veterinarian for 3 countries: The US Show jumping Team, the Australian Three-Day Team and the Ecuadorian Three-Day Olympic Team, and has experience in all of the Olympic equestrian disciplines. He has been a Treating Veterinarian at multiple Olympic Games, World Championships and European Championships. Dr. Keane is grateful for the opportunity to work for Olympic caliber clients and Thoroughbred racing Hall of Fame trainers for whom he has worked for more than 30 years.
He was honored to be a co-contributor of the current “bible” on equine lameness: Diagnosis and Management of Lameness in the Horse (Ross/Dyson), which is currently in its second publication.
He is a member of the AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association), the AAEP (American Association of Equine Practitioners) and the RCVS (Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons).
Dr. Keane currently serves on the USEF Eventing Technical Committee and is also certified as an FEI Veterinarian.
Dr. Keane is a horse owner and active three-day competitor as time allows.
Dr. Taylor grew up in Topsfield, MA where she was an active member in the horse community through competing in eventing and involvement in the United States Pony Club. She attended the University of Findlay where she obtained a Bachelors of Science degree followed by Michigan State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine where she earned her DVM degree in 2012.
Upon graduation from Michigan State University Dr. Taylor completed a 1-year rotating internship position at New England Equine Medical and Surgical Center. During this internship she gained comprehensive training in various aspects of medicine, surgery, and further developed her training in sports medicine. Following her internship Dr. Taylor practiced in New England before relocating to Pennsylvania in 2015 to work as a veterinarian at Sports Medicine Associates of Chester County, which she purchased with Taryn Gassert in 2023.
Dr. Taylor has a special interest in lameness prevention, imaging, biomechanics and rehabilitation. These interests have stemmed from her background competing event horses and having the opportunity throughout her career to work on top level athletes; managing their soundness for competition, and diagnosing and rehabilitating a variety of injuries.
In addition Dr. Taylor and her husband purchased and founded Twin Ponds Farm in 2019. The farm was transformed into a top class facility to provide care and expertise to rehabilitate horses and provide resources for their owners. Dr. Taylor is an avid competitor in the sport of Eventing. When she is not practicing or working at her farm you can often find her at events on the east coast working and competing. Dr. Taylor is a member of ISELP, AAEP, AVMA and is a licensed FEI treating veterinarian.
Dr. Gassert grew up in Reading, Pennsylvania where she was an active member in the local pony club and competed in eventing. She received her Bachelors of Science degree from the University of Delaware followed by her veterinary medical doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania.
After graduating veterinary school in 2007, Dr. Gassert completed a one-year rotating internship in medicine and surgery at Peterson and Smith Equine Hospital in Ocala, Florida. She then completed an additional internship in surgery at the University of Pennsylvania New Bolton Center.
Following completion of her internships Dr. Gassert moved to Lexington, Kentucky and worked in private practice focusing on lameness and sports medicine in sport horses and Thoroughbred race horses.
Dr. Gassert joined Sports Medicine Associates of Chester County in 2016 and purchased the practice in partnership with Dr. Taylor in 2023. Dr. Gassert is certified in Equine Acupuncture and is a member of ISELP, AAEP, AVMA and a licensed FEI treating
veterinarian. Her primary interests are equine lameness, diagnostic imaging and equine athletic soundness management.
Dr. Amber Boss, DVM grew up in Montgomery County, PA where she started riding at a young age and quickly fell in love with horses.
Dr. Boss received her Bachelors in Equine Studies and a minor in Dairy Management from the University of New Hampshire, then went on to earn her DVM from UC Davis. While in veterinary school she also completed her acupuncture certification through Chi University.
After graduating from veterinary school, Dr. Boss completed a rotating internship at the Mid-Atlantic Equine Medical Center where she gained valuable skills in surgery, internal medicine, lameness, and diagnostic imaging.
She joined Sports Medicine Associates as an associate veterinarian in 2024. Her professional interests include ophthalmology, laceration repair, diagnostic imaging, and lameness.
Outside of work she enjoys riding, spending time with her dog Truffle, and reading fiction books.
With us since 2006, Stephanie brings medical training, restraint expertise, and competitive dressage experience.
A lifelong equestrian with a background in Thoroughbreds. She joined the team in 2019 and enjoys caring for athletes in training.
Gabby joined in 2022 and helps manage daily operations. She competes in dressage and eventing with her horses, Zeus and Mimi.
Liz supports both clients and clinicians and has a background in equine science and Thoroughbred breeding. She joined in 2022.
